I was reminded that Laughter IS the Best Medicine yesterday at a retreat I went to. One of the sessions at the retreat was "Laughter Yoga." I must say, I haven't laughed that long and hard in quite some time. You don't even need to be amused to receive the benefits of laughter. Just do it! Your body does not know the difference. Laughter increases the flow of oxygen to the heart and brain. It releases endorphins (for a happy feeling) and lowers the production of cortisol (the stress hormone) by as much as 75 percent. Now we all can use a dose of that! I've read stories of people overcoming … [Read more...]
Are carrots bad for you?
I was recently surprised when a friend told me she doesn't eat carrots because they are bad for you and an obstacle to weight loss. Hmm. How can this delicious, low-carb, fibrous vegetable be bad for you? Some research was in order. My friend based her opinion on the fact that carrots have a high glycemic index. The Glycemic index (GI) is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their effect on blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates that break down rapidly during digestion have the highest glycemic indices. Carbohydrates that break down slowly, releasing glucose gradually into the blood … [Read more...]
Delicious Quinoa Bowl

Next mix in the chopped nuts. Now top the dish with the apple pieces and another dash of cinnamon and - voila! - a healthy and tasty snack. Technorati Tags: quinoa … [Read more...]
It’s all about Balance!
What’s wrong with low-carb diets? A low carb diet is high in fat, especially saturated fat, which is proven to lead to heart disease. (I just got off the phone with my mom in Germany. The German TV is warning people of the Atkins diet and its affects on the arteries causing heart disease or possibly death!) Do not deprive your body of an essential nutrient. Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of fuel, which is stored as glycogen in your muscles. Why does it appear to be working? For every gram of glycogen that you store your muscles will store about 3g of water. When you … [Read more...]
Detox – Preparation
As mentioned in my previous article, I am currently preparing for a three week detoxification based on The Detox Box from Dr. Mark Hyman. I must admit, this detoxification program does take up a lot of time. I am just now catching up reporting back to you and would like to start with the preparation that it took to get ready for the program. First, of course, I had to study the materials in The Detox Box, which included an audio CD, a small booklet, and a set of cards. Based on this information the challenge was to research all the needed supplements, where to get them, how much was needed (based … [Read more...]
